Black History Month – Feb 7th, 2021 – Character Profile: Misty Knight

Mercedes “Misty” Knight was born and raised in New York City. She graduated the Police Academy with honors and joined the N.Y.P.D. and rose through the ranks, quickly becoming a lieutenant. She was partnered with Lt. Rafael “Rafe” Scarfe. During her tenure as a police officer Misty became good friends with Colleen Wing.[citation needed] While visiting a bank, Misty encountered a bomb. She tried to get rid of it, but when it exploded it took her right arm. Rafe did his best to wrap her wounds and got her to the nearest hospital where he stayed by his partner’s bedside. Unable to continue active duty after losing her arm, she was given a desk job. Tony Stark took notice of her heroism, providing her with a bionic arm.

During this time, the Human Torch and Spider-Man stopped some thieves from stealing Christmas presents from Misty. It would be years before she revealed this to the heroes.

Knightwing Restorations, Ltd
Misty rejected settling for a desk job and instead left the N.Y.P.D. to start a private investigation business with Colleen Wing, Knightwing Restorations, Ltd. The Cult of Kali attacked Colleen’s home and Misty tried to protect her friend. Mistaking Iron Fist for one of the cultists, he was forced to knock her out as he rescued the Wings.

She helped Iron Fist track Colleen, who had been kidnapped by Master Khan. She met with Rafe who helped in locating her friend. Together they fought the Ravager and the Steel Serpent. During the fight with Ravager, he blasted Misty’s arm, revealing to Iron Fist that it was bionic. Working together, they were able to rescue Colleen. She later helped Danny gain his company back and helped him take down Chaka Khan and the Golden Tigers.

Misty and Rafe were called into the office of D.A. Blake Tower, who wanted Misty to infiltrate Bushmaster’s criminal organization. Rafe was against it, as everyone who had gone undercover had wound up dead. She took the name Maya Korday. This led her, Colleen, Iron Fist, and Spider-Man into conflict with Steel Serpent. It was during this fight that the duo of Misty and Colleen received the nickname “Daughters of the Dragon,” a moniker sarcastically bestowed upon them by Steel Serpent.

Luke Cage was sent by Bushmaster to kidnap Misty, or else his friends Claire Temple and Noah Burstein would be hurt. He was forced to fight Iron Fist; however, they decided to work together to take down Bushmaster, save Luke’s friends, and clear his name of all charges. The Daughters of the Dragon frequently teamed up with Iron Fist and Luke Cage once they formed the Heroes for Hire.

When work began to dry up, Misty took work as as a paralegal for Nelson and Murdock. During this time, she helped Daredevil fight Mr Hyde and Insomnia.

Misty and Iron Fist’s complicated relationship

Misty would meet the love of her life, Daniel Rand, through Colleen. Danny is a superhero who goes by the name Iron Fist, a member of the Heroes for Hire organization. Nightwing Restorations Ltd has helped Heroes for Hire on multiple occasions. After a long period of ill definition, Danny and Misty finally become a formal couple in the pages of Immortal Iron Fist. At the end of that series, Misty was believed to be pregnant with Iron Fist’s child until she found out it is a false pregnancy and was only traces of his life-force and not an actual conception. As a result of this the two leave in different apartments though their relationship is still intact.

Powers and Abilities

Misty Knight is highly skilled in martial arts and is a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, with police combat training. She also has near-perfect aim with firearms, and possesses superb detective skills. Her bionic arm is 75 times superhumanly stronger than a normal arm, and she can punch a target with incredible force, or crush objects as tough as steel in her vise-like grip. However, since the rest of her body is not cybernetically enhanced, she cannot lift objects heavier than her back, shoulders, and legs can physically support. Her arm’s advantages as a weapon are limited to kinetic crushing and impact forces.

Her original bionic right arm is an alloy of Antarctic vibranium and diamond; at close range it can liquefy all known metals including adamantium. It is also now able to generate a wide anti-gravity repulsor field similar to Iron Man’s armor. It can also apparently release a concentrated beam of cryogenic energy, which can cover a target in a blanket of ice from a distance. This cold also seems to make the target much more fragile, allowing otherwise durable materials to be broken or rended when frozen. Iron Man also revealed the arm also displays technopathic capabilities, teaching Misty how to control a horde of robots. Following her “pregnancy”, Danny Rand spent money on additional features to the arm, including magnetism and a concussive blast.

Simone Missick as Misty Knight

• Misty Knight made her live-action debut in Luke Cage, which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the series, Misty Knight is still an officer of the NYPD, and gets involved in the feud between Cage and Cornell Stokes ‘ gang. Throughout the season, Misty becomes increasingly disillusioned with the system, and has a romance with Luke. During the second season, she continues her investigation into Mariah Dillard and Shades, and eventually teams up with Luke to fight Bushmaster. She is played by Simone Missick.
• Simone Missick reprises her role in The Defenders, where Misty serves as the team’s ally within the NYPD. She comes embroiled in the events of the mini-series after being promoted to a special taskforce that is trying to take down the Hand. She eventually loses her right arm in an attempt to defend Claire Temple from Bakuto, but receives an advanced robotic replacement from the Rand Corporation.

Black History Month – Feb 6th, 2021 – Character Profile: War Machine

Tony Stark’s best friend, James Rhodes, is one of the few to wear the Iron Man armor, other than Tony Stark himself. Although he initially took on the role when Stark was dealing with his demons, Rhodes has reprised the role over the years.

While growing up in South Philadelphia, James Rhodes was frequently bullied, and he longed to forge a new life for himself by moving away. Despite his hardship, he remained noble and good, even forming a close childhood bond with a girl named Glenda Sandoval and defending her from other children. However, when he gravely injured another child in the process, Rhodes was sent to a juvenile correctional facility

Later in life, Rhodes joined the Marines. He served for several tours in Southeast Asia, while also studying to become an aviation engineer. He became particularly close to fellow Marine Parnell Jacobs, who he even introduced to his childhood friend Glenda; they fell in love and later married.

Despite his military background, Rhodes hated taking lives and it took a toll on him. After his helicopter was shot down during a mission, he was found by Tony Stark AKA Iron Man, after the latter’s own situation had gone awry. The two worked together to escape. Out of the Iron Man armor, Stark offered Rhodes a job as his pilot, which he took once his tour of duty was complete.

While Rhodes doesn’t have super human powers, the War Machine armor designed for him by Tony Stark gives him unprecedented strength and a massive arsenal of weapons. War Machine can fly at Mach 2 and is equipped with a variety of projectile weapons such as repulsor rays, bombs, guns, and missiles. A unibeam in the chest plate can project virtually every light spectrum, a laser beam, and an electromagnetic pulse generator that can shut down electronic devices within a 50-yard radius. The armor can reboot itself within minutes.

The War Machine armor also keeps Rhodes safe from radiation and physical attacks and is specially coated to resist radar detection. A holographic generator can alter the appearance of the armor, rendering War Machine unrecognizable. The armor’s systems are operated by a cybernetic link to Rhodes that shields him from mental attacks. They also include a targeting computer, radar and environment sensors, and a sophisticated subspace/satellite radio communications array that can detect local radio signals.

If War Machine is attacked, the armor contains life support systems, including an hour’s air supply, and can be sealed for space and underwater travel.

Rhodey first wore the War Machine armor which holds various weapons such as repulsors, unibeam, concussion pulses, twin barreled cannon in right gauntlet, laser blade in left gauntlet, wrist-mounted flamethrower, shoulder mounted gatling gun, shoulder mounted box rocket launcher and shoulder mounted particle beam. The armor has more plating and shielding than standard armors. It has a muscularly aligned matrix of crystallized iron enhanced by magnetic fields over layers of other metals like titanium, which grants him endurance capable of withstanding high caliber bullets with ease. He can withstand rockets, torpedoes and such, although he does take damage.

A additional polyprismatic coating was developed to counter laser fire.

Strength Level:

Every Platform since the MARK VI amplifies the wears strength by at least 500x at 100% power. So under optimal conditions, James Rhodes can lift/press more than 200Tons when wearing a sufficient charged set of armor.

Armor Set “Baseline Abilities:”

Much like the Iron Man Platform, The WarMachine battlesuit can maintain sustained flight at high speeds, exceeding the speed of a jet airplane, due to the rocket propulsion units in the armors boots, and palms. War Machine’s flight speed varies from a ‘casual’ cruising velocity of about 540mph up to MACH2 (twice the airspeed of sound). The suit is capable of moving at greater speeds for shorter distances.

War Machine’s suit has many power sources, such as solar converters, electrical batteries and an on-board generator that uses beta particle absorption as a fuel source. The suit is also able to convert nearby energy sources, such as heat or kinetic energy into electricity, or even drain electrical energy directly into the batteries for recharge. Although the suit has some open holes to allow the wearer to breathe normal air, it can be sealed off, allowing the pilot of the suit to go underwater or into space by granting its own life support and limited air supply systems.

Stark also has equipped the War Machine armor with numerous weapons over the years, making the suit more powerful with each upgrade. The most often used weapons are the repulsor rays (magnetically channeled beams of super-heated plasma) that are fired from the suit’s palms or gauntlets. Other weapons that are built into the armor include the uni-beam projector in its chest (controlling the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum from blinding searchlights to cutting lasers), pulse bolts that pick up kinetic energy along the way, so that they hit harder the further they have to travel, an electromagnetic pulse generator and energy shield. Of course a number of conventional munitions-focused micro-tech weapons (RPGs, micro-burst missiles, armor piercing rounds, mini-Gatling gun turret) are also part of the War Machine armor’s weapons array.

Black History Month – Feb 5th, 2021 – Character Profile: Cyborg

Victor Stone is the son of Silas and Elinore Stone, two STAR Labs scientists intent on using their research to improve mankind. Silas and Elinore scientific adventures often estranged their son, as they would sometime dedicate more time and toward their work, oppose to him. The two even used their son as a test subject for intelligence-boosting experimentation. While the successful experiment granted Victor a genius-level intellect, he resented his parents for treating him more like a lab subject oppose to a son.

Vic’s resentment caused him to steer away from science and math in high school. Instead, he pursued an interest in athletics, much to his father’s disdain. His life changed profoundly during a visit to STAR Labs to meet up with his parents, who were busy conducting inter-dimensional experiments. The experiment accidentally allowed a protoplasmic creature into the lab. Silas managed to return the creature to its home dimension, but not before it had slain Elinore and severely injured Victor. Desperate to save his son’s life, Silas used untested cybernetic enhancements to rebuild and reconstruct Victor’s body. He succeeded, but didn’t anticipate Victor’s horror and anger at what he had done.

Pre-Flashpoint: Modern Age

The reaction of others to his new form made Vic even more resentful, and he isolated himself from his former life as much as possible by moving to Hell’s Kitchen. It was in this bad neighborhood that Raven found Vic and invited him to join the Teen Titans. After the team formed, Vic found a place where he was accepted and appreciated, despite his inhuman appearance. His father, still feeling guilt over what he made his son go through, constructed the Titan’s Tower for his son and his companions. Victor would remain a steadfast member of the Titans for a long time, serving not only as a hero but as a primary supplemental tech source for the team.

Post-Flashpoint (New 52)

After the events of Flashpoint, DC Comics relaunched their entire comic catalog. In this continuity, Cyborg is now one of the seven founding members of the Justice League (replacing the Martian Manhunter), having never served with Teen Titan. He makes his first appearance in Justice League #1 but not as part of the team. In fact, he’s a high school football player who hasn’t even become “Cyborg” yet. After the Darkseid invasion, Victor was gravely injured and later cybernetically enhanced by his father. Due to the events of Forever Evil, Cyborg gets an upgraded armor that appears to be much slimmer.

Cyborg possesses cybernetic enhancements that provide superhuman strength, endurance and durability. Cyborg can also interface with computers. Shape-Change: Cyborg has virtually unlimited shape-changing abilities that allow him to mimic road, air or space vehicles and even reshape his entire body or parts of it to form such complex shapes such as a tank.

Amanda Blake grew up in the crime-ridden Cabrini-Green area of Chicago. At the age of 18 she married the 20-year-old Joseph Waller, and they quickly had a large family together. Her first child was Joe, Jr., then Damita, then the twins Martin and Jessie, and then her youngest child Coretta. Their lives were a financial struggle, and they relied on social programs, but they were happy. Joe, Jr. was set to go to college on a basketball scholarship until he was killed in a mugging gone wrong. Damita was raped and murdered in an alleyway on her way home from church. They knew who was responsible, but the police could not get a conviction with no witnesses. Her husband Joseph Waller set out to kill the rapist “Candyman” and both men shot each other dead. Amanda swore that the streets would take no more of her family. She worked hard to put all of her other children through college, then she put herself through college and earned a political science degree. Amanda decided to go into politics, and she approached democratic congressional candidate Marvin Collins to become his campaign director. Collins was elected thanks to her efforts, and he took her to Washington as his aide. Amanda discovered the old Task Force X files while searching through old bills, and asked to revive the Suicide Squad under her direction.

Formed from clay as a twin to Diana (Wonder Woman), the dark-skinned Nubia was kidnapped by Mars, who raised her, controlling her mind so that she would help him bring down the Amazons.

After a session in the Amazon memory banks, Diana was confronted by an armored female warrior who challenged her to single combat. The two initially wrestled, then faced each other with swords. Diana and the intruder seemed evenly matched until the intruder knocked the sword from Diana’s hands, and then hesitated to kill her, giving Diana the chance to wrestle her to a draw.

The stranger declared herself as Nubia. Queen Hippolyta wondered if this was indeed the same Nubia who was to be raised as Diana’s sister.

Nubia left the Amazons and returned to her mist-concealed Floating Island (named Slaughter Island by Mars). She told Diana that they will meet again and one of them will be proven the true Wonder Woman. She eventually did return, and reiterated her claim to the title of Wonder Woman. Later on, Nubia put down a challenge to her rule by one of the male warriors of Slaughter Island; she defeated the man but let him live, stating that “A woman doesn’t destroy life, she cherishes it!”

Sometime later, Supergirl was made an honorary Amazon. When it was discovered that Nubia was suffering from a mutated shark’s poisoning, Hippolyta sent Kara to retrieve a rare root needed to cure her.

Jordan complied and recruited and equipped Stewart with the standard uniform and power ring. To Jordan, Stewart's first mission began badly with the assignment of protecting a racist politician and Stewart took advantage of averting an accident to embarrass him in the process. However, Stewart soon proved his worth when an apparent African American assassin shot at the politician, but Stewart refused to intervene with Jordan to move in response to the attack. However, Stewart had good reasons for this apparent dereliction of duty when he stopped a gunman from killing a police officer in the outside parking lot at the event while Jordan was pursuing a decoy. When Jordan confronted Stewart for his actions, Stewart effectively explained the situation of the ruse and the fact the politician staged it for political advantage. Oan Energy Conduit: The rings use Oan energy (supplied by a Green Lantern Power Battery) which in most cases takes the form of green light. Rot Lop Fan, from a race without eyes, perceives it as the sound “F-Sharp” and his ‘ring’ is actually a bell. A Green Lantern’s ring, considered to be one of, if not the most powerful weapon in the universe, has the ability to affect and use fundamental forces of the known universe, including gravity, radiation, heat, light, and blasts of concussive force. It is also theorized that the ring also has a basis in other dimensional energies commonly called magic by users of such energies. The ring can also create fields of force formed from an unknown energy that was bound by the users’ will. The limitations of such use are the skill, knowledge and imagination of the user.

• Energy Projection: The ring can be used to fire blasts of Oan energy or create weapons such as projectiles of them. The ring can project beams of force powered by the will of the user. Kyle generally uses fanciful constructs in the shape of advanced technology. Their appearance does not indicate the power of the weapon. The weapons power is more an indication of the will of the user. Certain users (i.e. Hal Jordan) have been powerful enough to stagger even Superman. If the user wishes, they can alter the form of the blasts, such as Kilowog‘s “booms.”
• Force Field: The ring can create various forcefields of various sizes and shapes to protect the wearer and others around him. With the cosmic scope of a Green Lantern’s duties, it is only natural that the power ring is designed for operation in space. The ring creates a force-field around the wearer, protecting him/her/it from the hazards of the void including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter which would ordinarily be fatal should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to the ring wielder’s biology is created inside the force-field, body temperature is maintained and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses which could cause injury are stabilized for the ring wielder. The only exception to force fields was attacks based on the color yellow. The newer version of the ring is not limited by the color yellow as long as the wielder can overcome their fear.
• Energy Constructs: The ring can form constructs of Oan energy. The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer’s thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer’s strength of willpower. A Green Lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the willpower necessary to will it into existence. The constructs are made out of green energy, which is a tangible form of pure willpower, and they exist only as long as a Green Lantern is fueling it with their willpower. Items created by the rings are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the willpower of the Green Lantern creating them. The types of constructs usually reflects the ring wearer’s personality. Green Kryptonite has also been constructed using a Ring.
• Phasing: The Power Ring allows the wearer to pass through certain solid objects, such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the wearer’s willpower and the density of the object’s molecular structure. It has also been cited that the wielder could pass through the fourth dimensional gap or dissemble their own molecular structure.
• Environmental Playback: Upon request, the power ring can recreate a holographic environment based on data in its memory banks. The ring wielder can observe events in a ghostlike state, but the ring wielder cannot alter the outcome of the playback. All objects in the playback will appear in the full spectrum of colors, regardless of the wielder’s level of expertise creating simulacrums. The power ring will automatically end the playback if outside interference warrants the ring wielder’s undivided attention.
• Invisibility & Light Refraction: A ring wielder can render him/her/itself invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around his/her/its form, as well as that of the power ring. Presumably, a similar action allows an experienced ring wielder to create objects of colors other than green. As Hal Jordan’s experience grew, he was able to create power ring illusions of people and objects. It can be assumed the ring wielder would not risk the extra time and effort to create other colors in a combat situation.
• Energy Twin: The power ring allows the wearer to create an “energy twin” of his/her/itself that can travel at far greater speeds than that of the ring wielder’s physical form. While the energy twin is active the ring wielder remains motionless, his/her/its life force is needed to guide the energy twin. The energy twin can not alter its surroundings, and may only be perceived by the Guardians or another ring wielder as a green, ghostlike image. Any knowledge gained by the energy twin is transferred back to the ring wielder’s physical form upon recontact with the body. The Guardians frequently used energy twins as a means of contacting a Green Lantern. As a rule, a ring wielder can not create actual, independent duplicates of him/her/itself, as the power ring cannot create life.
• Energy Absorption: The ring can absorb and store most other energies. Doing so does NOT replenish the normal store of energy the ring has. A ring that needs recharging but contained a store of electricity could only discharge that electricity, for example. In an episode of Static Shock, John Stewart was able to defeat Sinestro via merging the remainder of his Oan energy and discharging it simultaneously with electrical energy supplied continuously by Static.
• Flight: By the manipulation of anti-gravitons and directed molecular movement, the ring allows the user to fly at incredible speeds. In atmosphere, a Green Lantern has been known to fly as fast as Mach 10 in atmosphere by creating an aerodynamic envelope around his body. Towing others, usually within a bubble, his speed is limited to the twice the speed of sound or 1440 mph. In space, Green Lantern’s speed can be significantly greater and has been known to approach 80% of lightspeed in normal space. Flight is possible at velocities exceeding light speed. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance, since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring’s field.
• Wormholes & Spacial Warps: The power ring grants its wearer access to wormholes in space, enabling the ring wielder to rapidly cut time and distance needed for transport. The Guardians established at least one known wormhole to Oa, which required the use of a power ring to enter. Black holes can be navigated by experienced ring wielders. During a battle with Sinestro and his ally, Mad God Sector 3600, members of the Green Lantern Corps of Earth and the Green Lantern Corps of the Klyminade traveled through a black hole to be deposited outside a white hole in Space Sector 872. The power ring cannot generate a Boom Tube, as it needs a Mother Box and a sample of the highly unstable X-Element. There is no known way to duplicate either item, even with the power ring. Should a Green Lantern make his/her/its way to the other-dimensional worlds of Apokolips or New Genesis through a Boom Tube, the ring will function as it does in the rest of the universe. John Stewart encountered no ring related difficulties during his stay on New Genesis, despite the loss of the Central Power Battery. The ring wielder would still need a Boom Tube to return to his/her/it’s dimension.
• Time Travel: Time travel is possible with the power ring, though the further forward in time a ring wielder travels, the more willpower it takes. As Green Lantern, Hal Jordan once explored as far as the 70th century. Jordan had also traveled to the 58th century as Pol Manning, a role later adopted by Salaak of Slyggia.
• Limited Cellular Regeneration: This ring has a limited ability to heal physical injuries; this seems to be a feature held over from the previous incarnations of the ring. Green Lantern can use the ring to repair minor injuries in himself or others. Speculation has been rendered to wonder if Kyle actually had medical knowledge, that he would be able to cure a wider variety of dysfunctions, beyond normal physical injuries.
• Electromagnetic Scanning: The ring has a wide range of detection abilities based on the imagination of the user. If one can conceive of it, he can probably detect it. Magical effects like clairvoyance, seem to be beyond the scope of the ring. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the ring, including radio, television, infrared, ultraviolet, and high frequency band communications.
• Search Probes: A user was capable of sending probes through their Power Ring that were tasked with locating specific targets or individuals.
• Galactic Encyclopedia: The earlier rings worn by the Corps functioned as references for their users. Having the vast knowledge of the Oans to draw upon, each ring functioned as a ready reference on most peoples, stellar events and conditions that may have been seen by other rings or other Green Lanterns. The rings also served as a repository of adventures had by the Green Lantern and these mission reports were stored in the Prime Battery on Oa for review and training.
• Universal Translator: The power ring can translate virtually any language in the universe, facilitating diplomatic encounters rather than violent confrontations. Complications can arise, though, when a frame of reference for translation is not available, as evidenced during Katma Tui’s induction of Rot Lop Fan into the Green Lantern Corps.
• Material Alteration: The Green Lantern’s uniform is not made out of fabric. It is created by the Power Ring whenever the wearer wills to wear it. It automatically appears over the wearer’s normal clothing, and vanishes when the wearer wills to return to their civilian attire. Most Green Lanterns wear similar uniforms that are programmed into the ring by default, such as Hal Jordan’s uniform. However, each Green Lantern is able to adjust their uniform to fit their own needs, personalities and whims. Jack Chance is the most extreme example, refusing to wear a uniform save for a Lantern badge on his trench coat. The green parts of the wearer’s uniform are usually hot to those who touch it, while the black parts are cold. The uniform also produces a “siren” taking on the form of the Green Lantern Corps’ symbol, circling the Green Lantern when active. The symbol, or badge, will not appear on the uniform until after a newly inducted Lantern has completed training on Oa, leading to the term “White-circle” to describe a rookie Lantern.
• Ring Duplication: Most Power Rings are capable of automatically duplicating themselves. Each duplicate typically shares the qualities and capabilities of the original ring. Each duplicate still requires to be recharged by a personal power battery. Some “temporary” rings can also be made, as well as rings with severe limitations and pre-programmed commands. All power rings, as being based upon the green ring templates created by the Guardians of the Universe, are all programmed to be able to duplicate themselves on a specialised command known apparently only by the Guardians.
• Emergency Beacon: A Green Lantern in distress can use his/her/its power ring as an emergency beacon. The alert can be directed to a Green Lantern’s neighboring sector, or it can be a Corps-wide alert.
• Homing Beacon: A homing beacon in the power ring can lead one Green Lantern to another. This was one of the recent power ring upgrade features added by the Guardians of the Universe. The power ring can be ordered to disguise itself to elude power ring wielding trackers. Most often ring wielders will allow the beacon to signal their location to others. The Green Lantern Corps of Earth found the remnants of the Green Lantern Corps of The Klyminade by tracking them through their power rings.
• Mind Alteration: Though the ethics of mind tampering may be debatable, sometimes it is necessary. As the power ring relies on thought and will to operate, mind tampering is not impossible. The difficulty lies in properly applying the power. There lies a risk of catastrophic damage to the mind should mistakes be made. A ring wielder can use the power ring to erase portions of an individual’s memories. To protect his secret identity as Hal Jordan, Green Lantern created a mental block in the mind of Major Disaster. Green Lanterns have used mind techniques as part of training. New recruits may be subjected to mind scans by other Green Lanterns or the Guardians of the Universe. They are taught to build mental defenses to protect themselves from psionic attack. The power ring can also be used to beam information from the ring wielder to another being. Green Lanterns have used this technique to share information regarding their enemies during combat situations.
• Pocket Dimension: Within the ring exists the possibility of an entire world. When Green Lantern Abin Sur of Ungara defeated the evil sorcerer Myrwhydden, he reduced the magician to submicroscopic size and imprisoned him inside the power ring, into a world created by the Green Lantern’s will. This undefined space may be a tesseract or a virtual reality created by the power ring. Whether or not this area exists in all rings has yet to be proven. Years after Abin Sur’s death, Myrwhydden’s power grew, allowing him to alter his environment and escape to battle the next Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. The power ring’s interior appeared as a barren wasteland, dotted with dead trees and sea shells which Myrwhydden used during an escape attempt.
• Security Protocol: The rings can be programmed. They are coded to the wearer to make them unusable if stolen. The ring will refuse to take an action that would kill a being unless they are on Oa or with permission. The Guardians recently removed the lethal force prohibition, first to allow lethal force against members of the Sinestro Corps, then against all enemies of the Green Lantern Corps.
• Preset Conditions: Commands can be stored in the ring to be executed at a later date, even if the bearer is not wearing the ring.
• Thought Relay: Otherwise known as a telepathic link.
• Levitation
• Hope Symbiosis: When in the presence of a Blue Lantern Power Ring, a Green Lantern Power Ring gains a power boost, as well as allowing the Blue Lantern to fully utilize his or her powers.
• Compassion Absorption: Similar to other lanterns natural “purge” of certain Power Rings, the Green Lanterns’ Power Ring has the ability to absorb energy of Indigo Lantern’s. This is made possible by their natural weakness found in Will Subversion.

The Mandalorian Episode 2 Review: The Child

Episode 2 picks up right after Episode 1 ends.  I guess its not a spoiler anymore that Mandy’s bounty target is a baby Yoda!  Not THE actual Yoda, but whatever Yoda’s species is called.  George Lucas always called him a frog and even once jokingly referred to him as “the illegitimate child of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.”  No further information is provided about the species origins or home world other than physical descriptions on Wookiepedia:

Members of the species were much shorter than an average Human, most standing below 70 centimeters, with lifespans of many hundreds of years (though their average lifespan is unknown because all known members of the species were Jedi, who generally lived longer than ordinary members of a species). Adults of the species were characterized by sharp, elfin ears, ridges on their foreheads, tridactyl hands and (most commonly) anisodactyl feet. Their leathery skin and blood were both light green. Their sharp teeth suggested a carnivorous diet. The diet of the most famous member of the species, Jedi Master Yoda, consisted of nutrient most other beings considered disgusting.

It was established in episode 1 by the bounty droid IG-11, that the bounty target was already 50 years old, but when we see the child he (or she) is the same size as a human infant.  Anyway, Mandy has captured the target and after several scenes that gave me straight up Lone Wolf and Cub vibes including a fight with several Trandoshan (i.e. Bossk) bounty hunters, he returns to his ship he notices that it is being stripped by Jawas.

The rest of the half hour episode (Really? Only a half hour?)  Mandy is fighting and later hilariously negotiating with Jawas to get his weapons and missing parts of his ship back, climbing up the side of a moving Sandcrawler and fighting a Mudhorn (similar to the rhinoceros beast from the arena battle in Attack of the Clones).  The Sandcrawler scene is a throwback to the old western tv shows and movies, with a dash of Adam West Batman wall crawling, where the hero jumps from his horse to a moving stagecoach or train only to get tossed over the side once he makes it to the top.

After that exercise in futility, Kuiil and Mandy negotiate for his missing items.  The Jawas tell him to get “the egg” from the lair of a Mudhorn, which of course he unhappily obliges.  In the final stage of the battle with the Mudhorn, Mandy is miraculously saved by baby Yoda who uses the force to levitate the beast to allow the fatal blow to be struck, thus proving that Yoda’s species is indeed strong with The Force from a very young age.

If I can talk about the Mudhorn and baby Yoda really quick… The monster is completely digital; however, baby Yoda seems to be a combination of both CGI and puppetry.  At least I think so.  Sometimes the child looks well rendered with tiny grey hairs on his head slightly moving in the breeze and his little mouth curling over tiny teeth and other times it straight up looks like a hand puppet operated by a kindergarten student in a school play. A little strange if you ask me and at times not well done.  

Another complaint that I didn’t address in my review of episode 1 is how flatly Pedro Pascal delivers his lines as The Mandalorian.  I realize that in general Mandalorians don’t speak very much, but I would hope that your lead character at least does something to make what little dialogue he has somewhat memorable.  Nick Nolte as Kuiil is far more interesting to listen to and spices it up a bit with his, “I have spoken.” This I remember.  After watching I can’t easily recall one line of dialogue uttered by what should always be the coolest character on the screen.

The episode ends with a touching scene with Kuiil where Mandy thanks him for negotiating with the Jawas and helping to repair his ship before taking off into space to return the child and retrieve his fortune.  Since Mandy doesn’t really let us viewers in on what he’s thinking were left to suppose that he has formed a bond with the child and won’t be too eager to hand him over.  At least not without asking some questions first.  I’m willing to bet that is what the rest of the season will be about: Mandy not handing over the child and now he is the one who is hunted by all the colorful bounty hunters the galaxy has to offer.

It was a solid episode for what it was, but to me the biggest missed opportunity at the end of the show is not having a preview to what comes next.  I guess I’m conditioned for that but not having that small inkling of what happening next and how the story is progressing makes each episode feel like they take place in a void.  You may or may not agree, just something to think about.

The Mandalorian Episode 1 Review

The Mandalorian is currently streaming on Disney+.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The series depicts a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

This is the Star Wars that I’ve wanted for a while now.  The Mandalorian is a well-deserved respite from The Jedi and The Sith, Kessel runs and trench runs, lightsabers and force lightning and the ultimate battle of good versus evil.  The Mandalorian is, in the words of Jango Fett, “Just a simple man, trying to make his way in the universe.”  It’s a story about what happens after.  Five years after the collapse of the Empire, empire credits aren’t worth a damn on backwater planets, people are out of work and hives of scum and villainy are all over the place.

Enter The Mandalorian, a lone gunfighter/bounty hunter going about his way collecting bounties, just making ends meet until he is given an off the books, high paying bounty by Greef Karga played by Carl Weathers, who really isn’t given enough shine in the 39 minute runtime.  Greef is the leader of the bounty hunter guild who gives ol Mandy a high value target to recover (recover alive specifically) at the behest of his deep pocketed client played by Warner Herzog. 

The client is hold over from the Empire days.  Complete with his gigantic empire chain and dusty Stormtrooper bodyguards who look ragged and like they have missed a few meals. The client is willing to pay in Beskar. He gives Mandy an ingot of Beskar and tells him he has a cargo hold full of the stuff as payment for completing the bounty.

I wasn’t familiar with Beskar, so I looked it up on Wookiepedia and learned that:

“Beskar is also known as Mandalorian iron.  It was an alloy used in Mandalorian armor, notable for its high tolerance to extreme forms of damage. The metal was durable enough to withstand a direct blaster shot and could potentially withstand the slash or glancing blow of a lightsaber, though could be penetrated with a direct stab. The metal could also be reforged to any warriors liking.”

After leaving The Client, we see ol’ Mandy head to his local hideout where he takes his Beskar and has it reforged into a shoulder pauldron by another Mandalorian. A pauldron is a component of plate armor which cover the shoulder area.

Here is where I feel like the show misses a key moment in storytelling.  At this point the show should try to give us some idea of what the Mandalorians purpose is within the show.  What is he seeking? Why are we watching?  What are his goals?  Is he looking to forge a complete set of armor made from Beskar?  Who knows.  We see the other Mandalorian blacksmith pound the pauldron into shape and each ring of the hammer triggers a flashback of Mandy being violently separated from his parents as a child. The history and mythos of The Mandalorians could and should have been fleshed out a bit more here.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic: War “A Jedi Caught in the MANDALORIAN WARS! #1 (January 11th, 2012)

Originating from the planet Mandalore in the Outer Rim, the Mandalorians’ history was one of warriors who would become feared throughout the galaxy, gaining a reputation as mercenaries and bounty hunters. They were also known to ride Mythosaurs. (which is actually referenced in the show) Even prior to the formation of the Old Republic, war dominated their way of life.

Mandalore had a largely martial history, but by the time of the Clone Wars the pacifist and reformist New Mandalorian political faction controlled Mandalore’s government, led by Duchess Satine Kryze. This led to internal conflict with other Mandalorian groups like Death Watch, who wanted to maintain the warrior ways of their Mandalorian heritage.

This life of war eventually turned to dreams of expansion, and a group of Mandalorian warriors known as the crusaders began waging war against other people to conquer their worlds. Armor-clad and wielding swords, the crusaders lay waste to many worlds during their wars. The crusaders conquered several worlds and systems beyond their own, among them the planets of Krownest and Concord Dawn. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic: War “ONWARD MANDALORIAN KNIGHTS!” #2 (January 11th, 2012)

Once completed with his shiny new shoulder guard (which hilariously doesn’t match anything else he’s wearing) Mandy trots off to the desert planet Arvala-7 to learn to ride a Blurrg (think: a much smaller Dewback), chat with the local moisture farmer voiced by Nick Nolte and collect his bounty target.

Upon reaching the bandit hideout (at this point, I was getting some serious The Outer Worlds vibes) he finds that another bounty hunter from the guild has already shown up, IG-11!

IG-11 is almost indistinguishable from the classic IG-88 from Empire.  He’s voiced by Taika Watiti (Thor Ragnarok and Thor: Blood and Thunder) and in my opinion steals the show. He’s funny, irreverent, insanely deadly and is always trying to blow himself up when cornered.

I’ll leave it there to avoid spoilers for the end of the show, but to sum it all up The Mandalorian is a good show for Disney+ first foray into additional Star Wars content. The cliff hanger for episode 1 has to be seen to be believed.  It’s incredible and I’m hooked for the next one.

 I just wished they would have fleshed out Mandy’s motivation for bounty hunting and maybe delve deeper into the history of Mandalorians.  But this is just the first episode.  The next episode comes out Friday November 15^th.  (See below for the rest of the release schedule) There are a total of 8 episodes and judging by the strength of the ending for episode 1, it’s going to be a wild ride.

Halloween Havoc: The Joker 🃏 🎃: The Joker driven sane by Lex Luthor?

In one of the more insane stories from this Joker mini-series the Joker and Lex Luthor swap emotional states. For a story written in the late 70’s, its super meta as Lex and the Joker don’t exactly swap brains, they semi-swap personalities. This story is basically a Saturday Morning cartoon that is dripping with behind the scenes drug use. Somebody was definitely smoking something when they were writing this. (Edit: Saturday Morning Cartoons don’t really exist anymore and if you missed that blessed era in history, I weep for you.)

The story starts out with The Joker sitting in a movie theater wearing a HILARIOUSLY RIDICULOUS AFRO wig (yeah hes’s still got the same pasty white face, red lips and rictus grin) watching a news reel(?) documentary of some of his past highlights.

What? Why would any theater show that? And just for posterity, have to say it again… HE’S WEARING A GODDAMN AFRO WIG.

Lex Luthor, who also just happens to be sitting in the same theater (WHAT?) hears Joker laughing and turns just in time to see the clown rushing out of the theater. Despite Jokers HILARIOUSLY RIDICULOUS AFRO, Lex stops him in the atrium and they start talking. Lex Luthor, the greatest criminal mind of our time and a mass murderer are just hanging out in a movie theater having a chat. Then they go across the parking lot and get a burger. Let that sink in.

Ok, I’m going on too long so I’ll just skip to the good stuff. Here’s the stuff you need to know quickly:

• Lex tries to hatch a plan called Operation Mindbreak. The plan is to put on a stupid looking helmet (think Cerebro from the X-Men) to drain the Green Lantern of his willpower.
• Green Lantern is asleep when Lex launches his brain rays across the city and is thus unaffected.
• The Joker barges in Lex’s secret hideout (he scaled the building using suction cups) and grabs the other helmet and puts it on.
• The machine somehow manages to force Lex and J to swap personalities.
• The story is batshit crazy (pun intended) and the writers know it.

The Joker is still the Joker, except now he’s not a goddamn maniac. He has the criminal focus of Luthor. However at his core, he’s still the Joker and has the presence of mind to know that he is still in full control of his Id but it’s his ego and super-ego that has been swapped out.

Luthor on the other hand is no longer the cold, calculating, ruthless businessman/super-villain, he’s stark raving mad. He’s in in possession of Jokers ego and super-ego. He’s laughing maniacally, is just as unpredictable and he likes it!

In an interesting back and forth, Lex states, “I don’t want to be sane again! When I was sane, I did everything because I hated Superman! Now I don’t hate anyone!”

To which the Joker responds, “You were driven by your hatred– Now you’ll be driven by your madness! You’re still in the same hell — only with different scenery!” For a story so Saturday Morning Cartoon this is surprisingly deep. But then it all goes back to schlock with more suction cup wall walking, jet boots and the Jokermoblile. Eventually Lex and Joker switch identities back, pass out in an alley (on top of each other) and get arrested.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn ♠️♣️♦️♥️

Like the silence that follows a mighty roar, the conclusion of Avengers Endgame and it’s spectacular epilogue Spider-Man: Far From Home have seemingly left a vacuum in the onslaught of superhero movies.

And we all know… that nature abhors a void.

But fear not! DC comics and Warner Brothers pictures are all too happy fill this void with the Joker standalone movie, Birds of Prey and the upcoming Suicide Squad 2.

While my personal jury is still out on if I will like a Joker movie with no Batman, I have to say I’m actually quite pumped for Birds of Prey. I even love the elongated title. Margot Robbie was one the only bright spot outside of the Batman cameos in the dumpster fire that was Suicide Squad and I’m eager to see how she has grown into the character after dumping the dead weight of Jared Leto’s “Mr. J”.

The next few characters I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing on the big screen is The Huntress played by Mary-Elizabeth Winsted and Black Canary played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell. I’ve been a huge fan for years and even though they didn’t really show that much of them in action using their powers in the trailer, I’m keeping the dream alive that they are saving the best bits for the next few trailers and TV spots.

Oh! And it’s R-Rated too??? Count me in.

Birds of Prey is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 7, 2020, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Incredible Hulk vs. The Gardener and the Time Stone. (The Incredible Hulk vol.1 #248, June, 1980)

Hulk has returned to Jarella’s world of K’ai to bury her body. Having found the world decimated since he last visited it he was taken to the Valley of Life to bury his love. There he was attacked by The Gardener who refuses to let any living humanoid set foot in his small paradise.

Bound in vines, the Hulk demands that the Gardener to let him free so he can bury Jarella. The Gardener refuses, and as the Hulk continues to struggle, the Elder of the Universe realizes that he cannot explain himself to the Hulk in this state of mind. Using his Soul Gem, the Gardener awakens the mind of Bruce Banner….

Although they are all referred to as Soul Gems here, these are actually the Infinity Gems which are not called by that name until Silver Surfer Vol 3 #44. Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z #5 clarifies that the Infinity Gem that the Gardner had in his possession on the moon was actually the Time Gem. It also confirms that the Gem used by Adam Warlock was specifically the Soul Gem.

He explains how he, like the other Elders of the Universe, have one single obsession to govern the eons-long lifetimes, with his being Gardening. He tells how he obtained a Soul Gem and used it recently to create a lush garden on Earth’s Moon. When the Stranger came to his paradise, the Gardener got assistance in dispelling the invader with the aid of Spider-Man and Adam Warlock. Warlock and the Gardener combined the power of their Soul Gem’s in order to repel the Stranger.

However, thinking that he had tainted his Gem’s ability to sustain life on the moon, the Gardener left, leaving the Gem behind. This Gem ended up in the possession of the Mad Titan known as Thanos, who was collecting all the Soul Gems to power a massive synthetic gem which he plotted to use to snuff out all the stars in the universe. Thanos was stopped thanks to the combined efforts of the Avengers, Spider-Man, the Thing and Adam Warlock. However, Warlock perished while turning Thanos into stone. The heroes then buried Warlock’s body on an asteroid and left his Soul Gem there on his grave. The Gardener later came and collected the Soul Gem and took it with him to K’ai where he created the Valley of Life. Remembering how his last paradise was tainted, the Gardener vowed to never allow man to tread in his gardens again.

With the tale finished, Banner asks the Gardener to at least allow him to give the woman he loves a decent burial. The Gardener refuses and carries Jarella’s body away, assuring Banner that she will be buried. Having yet another thing taken away from him causes Banner to burst into tears. His sorrow is so great his body reverts back to human form, allowing him to get free of the vines he is caught in. However, Banner refuses to give in and vows to find Jarella and bury her himself, even without the power of the Hulk.

 

Jarella’s followers wait outside of the Valley of Life fearing that their would-be king had been killed there. Suddenly, a stampede of animals come rushing out of the forest and begin attacking them. While inside the lush region, Banner stops by a stream to get a drink of water when he is suddenly attacked by the very thing he tried to drink. As he is being pulled into the liquid, Banner’s pulse races enough to trigger another transformation into the Hulk. The Hulk fights his way free and then leaps across the Valley in order to intercept the Gardener and his animal followers. The Gardener orders the animals to attack the Hulk, but they are no match for him. Seeing signs of the battle, the people of K’ai are reinvigorated and start fighting back against their attackers. Meanwhile, with no more animals to set upon the Hulk, the Gardener tries to fight the brute one-on-one.

The two struggle and the Gardner begins to wonder how powerful the Hulk really is. As they fight, the Soul Gem levitates off the Gardener’s brow and the Hulk knocks the Gardner aside and plucks it out of the air. Hulk comes to the conclusion that if the Soul Gem could create the Valley of Life it could also restore Jarella’s entire world. With that, the Hulk throws the Soul Gem into the ground and it burrows its way directly into the planet’s core.

 

As the planet begins springing to life, the animals quit fighting. The people of K’ai soon join the Hulk as he buries Jarella in the Valley of Life. When her grave marker is constructed they are all surprised by a flower that suddenly pops out of the rocks. This is the work of the Gardener who has realized how selfish he was being and asks the Hulk if he can stay. The Hulk tells the Gardener as long as he remains peaceful, he may remain on K’ai. With his lover finally buried, the Hulk tells the Gardener to send him back home. With a wave of his wand, the Gardner causes the Hulk to resume his normal size, leaving the people of K’ai leaderless but with a bright future ahead of them.

The Savage Dragon vs. Cutthroat and Glowbug

One of my favorite comics from the early 90’s was (and still is) The Savage Dragon. TSD was born from Erik Larsen,one of the most prolific artists of the time at Marvel Comics. Erik, along with Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefield, Jim Lee and a host of others jumped ship from Marvel where they felt like they were being creatively stifled and created Image Comics.

There, their creations would be their own and each persons destiny would be in his own hands. The studio went on to produce some classic (and not so classic) titles like: Spawn, Youngblood, The Maxx, Wild C.A.T.S., Trencher, Nighthawk and Cyberforce.

The Dragon from Savage Dragon is a large, green humanoid with a 10 inch fin protruding from his head. He has super strength and an enhanced healing factor (on par with Wolverines). He is a master of several forms of hand to hand combat and is highly proficient with several small arms including, but not limited to, police/military issue weapons and night sticks, assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, rocket/grenade launchers, military grade explosives, knives/bladed weapons, baseball bats, clubs and various other improvised devices.

Dragon is an amnesiac. His first memory is waking up in a burning field with no memory of his name or how he got there. Yet when questioned, he was able to answer several current event and pop culture related questions. He also retained his combat prowess and demonstrated it by firing off six shots from a police revolver and each bullet striking the exact same spot on the paper target leaving only one hole.

This was an interesting issue. It makes the end of Todd McFarlane’s run on Spider-Man. He transitioned from The Amazing Spider-Man to this comic which was simply named… Spider-Man. Todd was given something that is almost unheard of in Marvel Comics these days; creative free reign over the story, art and inks to create his ongoing series of Spidey adventures. The result, in my opinion was a pretty good run of Spider-Man stories.

This “sideways” issue shows Spider-Man teaming up with X-Force against The Juggernaut who is rampaging through downtown NYC.

Amadeus Cho is in self exile in deep space wen he gets a distress call from Sakaar. When his ship lands on the planet surface, he is captured and forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena by the evil despot known as The Warlord of Sakaar.

In the climactic battle between the two, the warlord unleashes his version of a worldbreaker, a Cold War era tactical nuke (how he got it is not explained) and drops right on top of the jade giants pointy coif.

We know that the Hulk can absorb nuclear energy, but so far the upper limits have not really been shown yet. My hypothesis is that the angrier he is the more he can absorb and you can see here, he was pretty angry…

Marvel unlocks the secret of the Infinity Stones and their current owners. (Infinity Countdown #1)

In Infinity Countdown #1 (2018) it looks like Marvel has changed the colors of the Infinity Stones to match their MCU counter parts and tweaked how they work. The stones (formerly called Gems) form a circuit when combined with each other forming a positive feedback loop unlocking their full potential and releasing the INFINITE power stored inside. The gems true potential lie within the users mastery of them individually.

The stones have always been mysterious and a subject of debate and discussion for years so it’s fun to see them fleshed out a bit more. I prefer the still have a twinge of mystery, but that’s just me.

The Red Skull has infiltrated the US Government and released a biological weapon in the form of a red mist at the base of Mount Rushmore. As the mist encroaches into nearby populated areas it kills everyone in its path and it’s up to the Avengers to stop him!

It’s a fairly basic story, bad guy intent on mass murder and the good guys have to stop him. It’s a good read with the highlight of Black Panther laying some serious smack down by brutally beating down the Skull and viciously breaking his jaw.

Black Panther Movie Review

Black Panther is not your ordinary Marvel Comics film.  It has begun a cultural movement all its own.  As a black man, I can’t remember the last time a movie with a black director and a predominately all black cast has made such a splash in the mainstream cultural consciousness in such a positive way.  It’s so amazing to see all these young black kids (and adults) coming out and supporting this movie, its cast and director Ryan Coogler.  It’s an astonishing and humbling site to see.

Is it a good movie though?  I’m not going to let my blackness get in the way of looking at this film with a critical eye…. but the answer is yes.  So lets talk about it.

The general plot of the movie is that Wakanda is an isolationist nation that has never been conquered or colonized by an outsider.  This due to the mountain sized vibranium deposit that was left when a meteor crashed in Africa millions of years ago.  The vibranium powers all of their technology.  Everything from medicine and transportation to the weapons of war and self defense.  As a nation that is entirely self sufficient, they are also loathe to lend aid to others.  A similar analogy would be like feeding the birds at the park.  It starts with just one, but before you know it, you have a whole flock at your feet.

This movie takes place after the events of Captain America 3: Civil War where King T’Chaka was killed by an explosion leaving young T’Challa in charge of a nation. Wakanda and its new king T’Challa, played exceptionally by Chadwick Boseman, want to protect their isolationist way of life from Erik Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan.

Killmonger feels like Wakanda is hoarding its technology and wants to use Wakandan advanced weapons and technology to wage war on the rest of the world.  Particularly those who he feels are currently oppressing peoples of color be it local police on up to governments.

The movie is beautifully shot with epic sweeping cinematography.  Wakanda is fleshed out with vibrant bustling streets, techno-organic skyscrapers, kids rushing off to school, young people jubilantly carousing about in cafes, waiting for sky car taxis, cooking street food and generally going about their business.  It’s definitely the most life like city in all of the Marvel Universe.

And the costumes.  Oh my god, the costumes. Ruth E. Carter, costume designer completely nails the afro-futurism look by blending the history and traditions of tribes from all over Africa. With 30 years of movie experience and two Oscar nominations for her work (on Malcolm X and Amistad), Carter understood the role clothing would play in shaping the film’s world. “Wakandans are serious about fashion,” Carter via said  The Atlantic, of the inhabitants of Black Panther’s tech-forward, eco-conscious, never-before-colonized country. Her vision for Wakandan dress draws from traditional and contemporary African fashion. Sartorial cues help viewers understand the social geography of a fictional place—its political ideologies, cultural norms, etiquette. It’s easier to convey these unspoken elements when a film is set in a space and time the audience already has some reference for. For example, American viewers can read the message of a certain dress or hairstyle in, say, 1960s Alabama, which worked in Carter’s favor when she was designing the costumes for Selma.

The impressive score is crafted by Ludwig Goransson.  The score is as textured and layered like the costumes as it blends and layers traditional African drums and vocalizations with a sweeping grandiosity usually reserved for epic films like Lawrence of Arabia, Out of Africa and dare I say it, Star Wars.

The cast rounds out the movie with powerhouse performances. Chadwick Boseman is a bit understated bringing a quiet maturity and presence to each scene, however I felt that the movie would have benefited from a bit more range from him.

The runaway star of the show, the scene-stealer is far and away is Shuri, the younger sister of T’Challa and played by Letitia Wright. She’s insanely smart, developing most if not all of the “Panther-tech”, plucky, irreverent and best of all: absolutely fearless.  If you are a fan and reader of the Black Panther comics, you already know that at some point Shuri dons the mantle of the Black Panther and becomes the protector of Wakanda. I’m hoping this is something we will seen in the inevitable sequel as word has it, Kevin Feige has already asked Ryan Coogler to return.

This film does have some issues however.  So lets talk about those too.

First off, the fight choreography isn’t my favorite.  While Danai Gurira shines bright in her scenes as General Okoye, leader of the all female Dora Milaje, the same can’t really be said for most of the scenes involving hand to hand combat.  The shots are cut quickly and the camera is way too close to see any meaningful movements.  It’s tends to be a jumble of arms, legs and other flailing limbs. Aside from this action scenes (the car chase aside) end a few short minutes after they begin.

The CGI (especially during the final fight between Killmonger and T’Challa) is just plain bad. It looks unfinished is really the only way to describe it and  seeing how well everything else is in the movie it’s really unfortunate and distracting.

This shouldn’t deter you from seeing the movie however.  Not in the slightest. It’s a cultural milestone and I am anxiously looking forward to revisiting T’Challa, Shuri, Okoye and Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther 2.

Go see it.  Now. This isn’t just a movie.  It’s a movement.

Venom trailer. Or something. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I gotta admit, I’m not a fan of a solo Venom movie without Spider-Man. I just don’t see the point. There’s a reason why Venom works as a villain. He’s (at least at first) the antithesis of Spider-Man, the dark version, the other side of the coin. The appeal of Venom is his juxtaposition against Spider-Man and the deep rooted psychological rivalry between Eddie Brock and Peter Parker.

In my opinion, on his own, Venom just isn’t that interesting unless he’s facing off against Spider-Man or it’s the Venom: Space Knight iteration or Venom: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But this movie doesn’t seem to be going in that direction at all. As a matter of fact, I can’t really tell what direction this movie is going because the trailer doesn’t really show anything. There’s lots of cars flying around, some explosions, the back of Tom Hardy’s head, Tom Hardy running in the woods and a microsecond shot of what appears to be the symbiote trapped in a glass container.

It just boggles my mind in this age of The Avengers, Deadpool, Justice League, Steppenwolf, et cetera, they would deliberately go out of their way to NOT show the character the movie is named after.

That’s not the way to hype your movie Sony.

Future trailers desperately need a tease or a reveal of the symbiote and some meaningful action scenes or it will be DOA. See the trailer below and let me know what you think.

According to Syfy, Krypton “will follow Superman’s grandfather – whose House of El was ostracized and shamed – as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice co-writer David S. Goyer will executive produce Krypton under his Phantom Four banner. Goyer also wrote the pilot alongside Ian Goldberg, who previously worked as a producer on Once Upon a Time and a writer on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Krypton will take place 200 years before the opening of Man of Steel. He went on to say while “it won’t be wall-to-wall visual effects every single moment” like Man of Steel, the show will “be digging into the characters and culture a lot more.

Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El: Superman’s grandfather and Jor-El’s father; athletic, quietly confident, and in his 20s. A younger version of the “grumpier” character from the comics.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics characters Scott Lang / Ant-Man and Hope van Dyne / Wasp. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, and the twentieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In what order should you watch all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies?

The best way would be to watch them in order of their release date. The films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have released in three phases. Which order did you watch the movies in?

Phase 1: Avengers Assembled

The Avengers Initiative (a.k.a Phase 1) was a secret project created by S.H.I.E.L.D. to create the Avengers, a collection of the most able individuals to defend Earth from imminent global threats; these individuals functioning as a response team to said threats which are too great for the forces of mankind to handle.

The Initiative was scrapped by the World Security Council after the alien incursion in New Mexico in favor of a weapons development program known as Phase 2. It was eventually reactivated in 2012 during the Chitauri Invasion.

Current location of the Infinity Stones 💎 in Marvel Comics (not the MCU)

The Avengers assembled after the Black Panther discovered that the Earth was affected by the incursions, a multiversal phenomena that caused the periodical collision between realities. In an attempt to stop the the latest incursion, the Illuminati assembled the Infinity Gauntlet.

Even though Captain America managed to prevent the incursion, all the gems shattered, with the exception of the Time Gem, which simply vanished.

The Time Gem unexpectedly returned some time later and transported the Avengers through time. During each time jump, the Gem returned more of the heroes back to the present until only Captain America remained, who was rescued by Iron Lad. Following a confrontation against Iron Lad and his future counterparts, Kang the Conqueror and Immortus, Captain America retrieved the Time Gem and used it to return to the present, though it vanished again afterwards.

Following the destruction of the entire Multiverse and its eventual restoration, the destroyed Infinity Gems were recreated and scattered across the universe. The Collector and the Grandmaster allied themselves with the Guardians of the Galaxy to find the stones, as they believed they held the key to learn more about the destruction and restoration of the universe.

This was because from the point of view of its inhabitants, this process occurred in a blink and went mostly unnoticed, and only powerful beings such as the Elders could sense traces of the mysterious re-ordering the cosmos had suffered.

The Space Gem (now colored blue) appeared mysteriously in a S.H.I.E.L.D. storage facility, with a failed attempt from Loki’s part to retrieve it resulting in the gem ending up in the hands of Wolverine.

The Power Gem (now colored purple) manifested in a giant-size in the desert planet of Xitaung, where it was found by the Nova Corps who are being assisted by The Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Punisher 💀 doles out street justice.

Ok who’s hype?  This looks awesome and great music choice as well! Here’s the poster:

Wonder Woman Review!

Wonder Woman has finally hit the big screen! After decades in comic books, television, animated movies, the Super Friends, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited and many others i’m probably forgetting, Wonder Woman has finally landed her own feature film.  And it was a really good movie.

A few things I appreciated about the film right off the bat (see what I did there?) were the direction, cinematography and action choreography.  Patty Jenkins should be applauded for taking this character, the mythos and location hopping and not turning it into one big commercial for the upcoming Justice Leauge movie.  You definitely get your tie-ins to the larger DC universe, as shown in the first three scenes of the movie when a Wayne Enterprises armored truck pulls up to the Louvre museum in Paris and a note from Bruce Wayne, but that is it for the rest of the movie.

The movie is told as one complete tale that solely focuses on Wonder Woman and her journey from the relative safety of Themyscira, through the trenches of what I am assuming was the Somme and to the final climactic battle with the head of the German war machine in the grim and grey of World War I.  She has a fully fleshed out character arc and I totally appreciate the care that went into crafting this tale.

Gal Gadot lights up the screen every time she appears and for all intents and purposes IS Wonder Woman.  She is unfairly beautiful, emotive, charismatic, charming and you can tell she fully prepared physically for this role.  She’s the best thing about the movie (as she should be) and I would argue that she was the best thing about Batman V Superman as well.

Chris Pine is Captain Kir– um, Steve Trevor, the dashing spy that crash lands in Themyscira and is the catalyst for Wonder Woman to leave her home and protect the world from the threat of war.  Pine is great as usual, with his familiar Kirk swag, but he never outshines Gadot.  A delicate balance struck by Patty Jenkins, to which more kudos should be given.

I don’t want to go into too much more detail about the movie for fear of spoiling some of the more exciting moments of the movie. Suffice to say, this is a film that should be experienced inside the theater.

Sometime in late 1987, DC Comics and Batman editor Dennis O’Neil became aware that Jason Todd had become unpopular with readers and decided to remove him from the Robin role. The question was how to do that. Seeking a new way to interact with fans, and perhaps inspired by references to a dead Jason in Frank Miller’s non-canonical future history comic book miniseries, The Dark Knight Returns, the company set up two 1-900 number 50-cent hotlines giving callers the ability to vote for or against Jason’s death. The call-in period started after publication of the issue in which Jason and his mother are trapped in the warehouse.

Over 10,000 votes were cast, with the final vote being 5,343 votes for Jason to die over 5,271 for him to live. DC published A Death in the Family to massive media attention, some of it critical. Over a decade later, in a Newsarama interview conducted alongside writer Judd Winick, O’Neil said: “I heard it was one guy, who programmed his computer to dial the thumbs down number every ninety seconds for eight hours, who made the difference.” If true, that would have amounted to over 200 votes (and 100 dollars), certainly enough to decide the count. There is no way to confirm that rumor, but it adds uncertainty to the question of whether the poll was an accurate measure of what fans wanted to happen to Jason Todd.

The issue of Jason Todd’s death was often raised over the years in the mainstream Batman stories, becoming almost as important a factor in his life as the death of his parents. It intensified Batman’s feud with the Joker, making it even more personal. In the course of the Batman: Knightfall story arc, Batman is exposed to the Scarecrow’s fear toxin, causing him to hallucinate about Jason’s death. However, instead of fear, he reacts in rage, and brutally beats the Joker while screaming Jason’s name. He often visits Jason’s gravesite and raises his death as a factor in his reluctance to take on new sidekicks, such as Tim Drake (the third Robin and current Red Robin), Stephanie Brown (the fourth Robin, and third Batgirl), Cassandra Cain (the second Batgirl), and Damian Wayne (the fifth Robin). Jason is memorialized in the Batcave; his Robin costume is preserved under glass, along with the epitaph “A Good Soldier.”

In the Hush storyline, it was hinted that Todd is alive, as a young man who strongly resembles him is standing on his desecrated grave. However, in the end, Batman finds that it was Clayface mimicking the role. In the “Under the Hood” arc, it is revealed that it was Todd whom Batman had fought, but he then switched places with the shapeshifter in collaboration with the villains Hush, Riddler, and Talia al Ghul. Todd reveals himself to Batman as the murderous vigilante, the Red Hood. Jason cripples Black Mask’s criminal organization in Gotham, and kidnaps the Joker and beats him with a crowbar in an abandoned building. During the ensuing struggle with Batman, Todd detonates the building, but he, Batman and the Joker survive.

The details of Todd’s return are revealed in Batman Annual #25 and Red Hood: The Lost Years #1-6.

Who is Ego the Living Planet? 🌎

Who is Ego the Living Planet?  If you just watched Guardians of the Galaxy you know that Ego, played by Kurt Russell is Peter Quill aka Star Lord’s father.  In the comics he has a similar origin as he explains in the movie, except he is not the father of any of the superheroes in the Guardians.  (Unless this has been retconned.  If so, let me know.)

So exactly who is he? What is he? Where did he come from? Keep reading for more answers…

I was digging around my old comic book archives looking for more stray trading cards and came across a few old issues of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. These official handbooks were compiled character profiles that were assembled into issues before Marvel started publishing them in the large hardcover format.

I flipped through a few pages and landed right on Ego the Living Planet! I had been meaning to do a profile since watching Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend but this saved me a ton of time. I scanned the two Ego pages and posted them here. I don’t think Ego has really changed much since this was printed, but if it has then please let me know!

 

 

Found some “old” Marvel trading cards in the basement (1992)

I was digging around in my old comic book boxes in the basement last night and came across this old shiny “hologram” Wolverine trading card.  It was sticking in the corner of the box and when I pulled it out, I also pulled out some old memories of riding my bike to the comic book store in the early 90’s with $10 bucks in my pocket and buying up all the latest Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld “X-books” and the Todd McFarlane “Spider-Man” comics.  I kept on digging through my old comic book box and unearth these treasures (along with a handful of Terminator 2 trading cards). I decided to scan them and add them here for posterity.  I’m not sure what sets they come from, all I really know is that I bought them around 1991-1992.  If you have any additional information or cards of your own like these, lets talk about it!

Group Affiliation: Excalibur First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #129, January 1980 Nothing slows Shadowcat down – if something gets in her way, she walks right through it! Her mutant ability to “phase” the molecules of her body gives her ghost like intangibility, letting her pass through walls, walk on air and allowing the things she touches to do the same. Though she’s a veteran super-hero, having served with both the X-Men and Excalibur, at heart she’s still an ordinary, rambunctious teenager-well maybe not so ordinary! X-TRA FACT: Though she lives in England with the rest of Exaclibur, Shadow Cat is America, born and raised near Chicago!

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy manages to keep the heart and spirit of adventure from the prequel and inject a new level of weirdness into the sequel and it is 100% appreciated by this comic book fan.

I really loved this movie. When I said there is a new level of weirdness in Vol. 2, I meant it in the best way possible.  In this movie we are literally walking around on a friggin Living Planet!  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features the group who has now, through a series of adventures and misadventures, begun to mesh together as a tea

Ayesha of The Sovreign

m and family.  They lend out their special talents to others, in this movie a race of genetically perfect, super pretentious, gold skinned people called “The Sovereign”, to take on threats that would send other people running for the space hills.
That threat is a giant rainbow shooting, bug eyed tentacle monster that has been eating (?) some very expensive space batteries that the Sovereign use.   The interesting part about this scene, which is right at the beginning of the movie, is that in most sci-fi movies a fight scene like this would usually be THE key scene in the film.  It’s a scene that would usually be the end or mid movie climax that is meant to grab and hold your attention.   In Guardians of the Galaxy it’s just a backdrop for baby Groot to dance to Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra.

Mantis has empathic powers and is able to transfer feelings to others as well as receive them.

The music in this movie is just as good as the first with some nice cuts like Fox on the Run by Sweet, My Sweet Lord by George Harrison, and Southern Nights by Glen Campbell and Bring it on Home to Me by Sam Cooke.   The highlights of the soundtrack for me were Brandy by Looking Glass and Father and Sons by Cat Stevens.  It was amazing to see how “Brandy” was used to illustrate the longing and the calling of the sea to the vast ocean of space that called Ego the Living Planet (played by Kurt Russell) away from Peter Quill’s mother and how that same calling can and will affect Peter in all of his future relationships. It’s a powerful and nuanced moment that I can’t help but feel that is almost too deep for a movie that features a talking tree and raccoon and where almost every other main character is a different hue.  But it fits.  It fits perfectly.  I didn’t think that that soundtrack was quite as powerful and striking as the Awesome Mix vol. 1 (Peter dancing to “Come and Get Your Love” is my favorite opening scene in all of the Marvel movies) but it still hit all the right notes right when it needed to.

Yondu gets his “fin” in Vol. 2.

To be completely fair and objective despite the amazing visuals and banging soundtrack, the first act of this movie is a bit of a mess.  It’snot unwatchable by any means (far from it actually), it just lacks direction.  There isn’t that one thing that really advances the plot (like trying to constantly stay one step ahead of Ronan the Accuser and keep the Infinity Gem out of his hands) and it kind of meanders a bit between action set pieces and people sitting and talking.  I’ll say this though, characters sitting and talking never gets boring because all the actors in this movie are all over the top interesting and the delivery of comedic lines are on point. When Ego finally lays bare his plans, that’s when things get REALLY get interesting.  I won’t spoil anything here, but he reveals a critical plot point that elicited loud gasps of disbelief in my theater.

That’s all I can really say about this movie for now because the longer I talk about it the more I’ll want to reveal some spoilers!  If you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend going as soon as you can.  It’s worth the full price of admission, especially if you were a fan of the prequel.

Can Galactus Eat Ego The Living Planet?

Galactus travels through space…

The world devourer pauses when he detects the thoughts of a powerful creature and decides to seek out its source as his hunger is mounting once more. Taking a smaller craft, Galactus flies into the Black Galaxy and finds himself before Ego the Living Planet.

While aboard the Rigellian flagship, Thor meets with the Rigellian commander and the Recorder to determine their plan of attack against Galactus. With their course set, Thor and the Recorder travel off in a ship to confront Galactus himself. The Recorder detects that Galactus is within the Black Galaxy and the two speed off to meet their foe there. They are spied by a group called the Wanderers, a group of aliens that have survived the destruction of their worlds at the hands of Galactus and seek revenge against the world destroyer and they decide to follow after Thor and the Recorder.

Finally, back in the Black Galaxy, Galactus and Ego boast about their mutual power and Galactus demands to consume Ego’s energies. Ego tries to stop this by unleashing a furious blast at Galactus, the force of which reaches Thor and the Recorder’s ship destroying it and seemingly killing its passengers.

 

 

The Mighty Thor meets Ego the Living Planet!

Thor and the Recorder robot travel into the Black Galaxy and find that it is structured in an almost organic fashion, dubbed by the Recorder as a “Bio-Verse.” Following their navigation they come before Ego the living planet, who tells the two that it has been waiting for them.

The Mighty Thor vs. Ego The Living Planet!

Thor and the Rigellian Recorder have traveled into the “Bio-Verse” where they meet Ego the Living Planet. Wanting to have a dialogue with with the two visitors, Ego changes his environment to one that the two visitors find familiar, and creating a Asgardian themed Avatar to show them around, as well as give them a show of his vast powers.

Ego explains to Thor that he intends to beat Thor in combat, rationalizing if he can defeat the Thunder God, then nothing can stop him from taking over the world. Dissolving his avatar, Ego forms an army of anti-bodies to battle Thor and the Recorder. Forced with fighting these mindless drones and deal with Ego constantly shifting the planets shape. Fighting off the anti-bodies, Thor and the Recorder are then sucked into the arterized tunnels of Ego’s being.
