A brief history of Illyana Rasputin (Magik)

Illyana Rasputin (born Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina) was born in the Ust-Ordynski Collective farm, near Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union to Nikolai Rasputin and his wife Alexandra Natalya Rasputina. Illyana’s two older brothers, Mikhail Nikolaievitch Rasputin and Colossus (Piotr “Peter” Nikolaievitch Rasputin) are also mutants. Colossus’ superhuman powers manifest while saving Illyana from a runaway tractor.

origin of magik

Illyana is called to the Limbo dimension by Belasco, who seeks to bring forth the Elder Gods to rule Earth.  She is raised there, frequently bullied and tormented by Belasco’s underling S’ym.  In order to free himself, Belasco needs to fill the Beatrix Medallion with five bloodstones. The bloodstones are created by corrupting Illyana’s soul, with a new stone appearing as her corruption deepens. She is rescued and tutored in the practice of white magic by that dimension’s version of Storm (who turned to magic when her mutant powers waned).

Rise of the Female Superhero

Rise of the Female Superhero

Ever since Superman first burst onto the printed page in 1938, superheroes have become a staple of American storytelling — from comic books and TV shows to blockbuster movies and video games — conquering evil and injustice throughout.

But when you hear the word “superhero,” you probably picture a strapping costumed man swooping in to save the day. However, a new generation of artists and writers are changing that image, responding to the ever-growing number of female fans who want to see their gender reflected in these heroic tales.

Jessica Jones: Who is Jessica Jones? (Marvel/Netflix)

Jessica Jones (Marvel/Netflix) – Who is Patricia “Patsy” Walker?

Created by Ruth Atkinson, Patsy Walker first appeared in Miss America Magazine #2 (cover-dated Nov. 1944), published by Marvel precursor Timely Comics. Redheaded Patsy Walker, her parents Stanley and Betty, her boyfriend Robert “Buzz” Baxter, and her raven-haired friendly rival Hedy Wolfe appeared from the 1940s through 1967 in issues of Miss America, Teen Comics, Girls’ Life, and the namesake teen-humor series Patsy Walker and its spin-offs: Patsy and Hedy, Patsy and Her Pals, and the single-issue A Date with Patsy.

Attesting to its quiet popularity, Patsy Walker (along with Millie the Model and Kid Colt, Outlaw) was among the very few titles published continuously by Marvel from the 1940s Golden Age of Comic Books, through Marvel’s 1950s iteration as Atlas Comics, and into the 1960s Silver Age of Comic Books.
Following Patsy’s high-school graduation, in issue #116 (Aug. 1964), the title switched from humor to become a young career-gal romantic adventure. Patsy Walker lasted through issue #124 (Dec. 1965), with Patsy and Hedy outlasting it to its own #110 (Feb. 1967).

Patsy and Hedy made a cameo appearance in Fantastic Four Annual #3 (1965), establishing them in the Marvel Universe.

Jessica Jones Teaser Trailer (Marvel/Netflix)

Marvel’s Jessica Jones, or simply Jessica Jones, is an upcoming American web television series developed for Netflix by Melissa Rosenberg, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is the second in a series of shows that will lead up to a Defenders crossover miniseries. The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios and Tall Girl Productions, with Rosenberg serving as show runner.

Krysten Ritter stars as Jones, a former superhero who opens her own detective agency after an end to her superhero career. David Tennant, Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, and Wil Traval also star. A version of the series was originally in development by Rosenberg for ABC in 2010, that was eventually passed on. By late 2013, Rosenberg reworked the series, when it reentered development for Netflix as A.K.A. Jessica Jones. Ritter was cast as Jones in December 2014, with production on Jessica Jones beginning in New York City in February 2015 and lasting until late August.

All episodes are set to premiere Friday November 20, 2015 on Netflix.

Luke Cage compares the Registration Act to slavery. (Civil War)

Luke Cage compares the registration act to slavery Luke Cage compares the registration act to slavery Luke Cage compares the registration act to slavery

From: New Avengers #22 (2006)

See the event that kicked off the Registration Act here!

How the New Warriors kicked off Civil War (2006).

During a televised raid of a house containing select villains that had recently escaped from the super villain facility at Ryker’s Island prison during a massive breakout, the escaped villain Nitro let off a massive explosion that killed the majority of the New Warriors, as well as the children at a nearby elementary school. In the wake of the tragedy, the U.S. Government proposed the Superhuman Registration Act.  The act requires any person in the United States with superhuman abilities to register with the federal government as a “human weapon of mass destruction,” reveal their true identity to the authorities, and undergo proper training. Those who sign also have the option of working for S.H.I.E.L.D., earning a salary and benefits such as those earned by other American civil servants. Characters within the superhero community in the Marvel Universe split into two groups: one advocating the registration as a responsible obligation, and the other opposing the law on the grounds that it violates civil liberties and the protection that secret identities provide. A number of villains have also chosen to take sides, some choosing to side with the registration, others against it. Luke Cage (previously the second Power Man), an African American, compared registration to slavery, and did so to Iron Man’s face. Others compared the act to the norms under which the police and soldiers operate.

The incident in Stamford by the super villain Nitro causes the US Government to introduce the Superhero Registration Act. Those not adhering to it are deemed unregistered and rogue superheroes. Tony Stark and Dr Reed Richards lead the side of the pro-registration superhero. Captain America leads the anti-registration side. Spider-Man, initially with Tony Stark, eventually joins the team of Captain America. Goliath is killed by the pro-registration superheroes.  Many super-villains join the Government in hunting down superheroes.

The Mighty Thor vs. Juggernaut part 2! – Introducing THE NEW WARRIORS!!! (Acts of Vengeance, 1989)

The New Warriors first appeared in issues 411 and 412 of the Marvel Comics title The Mighty Thor. The team was compiled by writer/editor Tom DeFalco, consisting of the young superheroes Firestar, Marvel Boy, Namorita, Nova and Speedball, all of whom were once featured in solo series or were supporting characters in more established series. To this mix DeFalco added Night Thrasher, an original character to serve as the team’s founder and leader. The New Warriors were not sidekicks, as some prior teen superhero teams had been.

Acts of Vengeance was a company-wide fall crossover that was centered on the Avengers and Fantastic Four. After three consecutive fall crossovers were built around the X-Men and related mutant teams, promotional materials teased the idea of a wide array of super-villains facing heroes they had never met (or at least were villains that weren’t part of the heroes’ regular gallery).

The core titles of the crossover include Avengers; Avengers Spotlight; Avengers West Coast; Captain America; Iron Man; Quasar; Thor; and Fantastic Four. Major tie-ins included The Amazing Spider-Man among other Spider-Man titles, Uncanny X-Men and the second Damage Control limited series. An epilogue features in Cloak and Dagger; Web Of Spider-Man and in an Avengers Annual.

Marvel Comics Presents: Weapon X

Marvel Comics Presents: Weapon X is the chronicle of Wolverine’s days with the Weapon X project, from the bonding of adamantium to his bones to his escape from the project, were revealed in the “Weapon X” story arc, written and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith and published in installments in the anthology series Marvel Comics Presents in 1991.

Weapon X is a fictional clandestine government genetic research facility project appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They are conducted by the Canadian Government’s Department K, which turns willing and unwilling beings into living weapons. The project often captures mutants and experiments on them to enhance their superpowers, turning them into weapons. They also mutate baseline humans. The Weapon X Project produced Wolverine, Leech, and other characters such as Deadpool and Sabretooth.

The story intertwines with some of Wolverine’s past, and eventually ends with Wolverine’s rampage being described in full, only to be revealed as the work of a Virtual reality system which actually predicted the events of Wolverine’s escape which then occur in real life moments later.

In this classic story, Experiment X, or the brutal adamantium-skeletal bonding process, (originally published in Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 in 1991) was eventually revealed as part of the “Weapon X Project.” Grant Morrison’s New X-Men in 2002 further revealed that Weapon X was the tenth of a series of such projects, collectively known as the Weapon Plus Program, and the X in “Weapon X” referred not (or not exclusively) to the letter X, but to the Roman numeral for the number 10. The first project, Weapon I, pertained to the Super Soldier Project that created Captain America.

12 Sensationally Stunning She-Hulk Covers

She-Hulk has been a member of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Heroes for Hire, the Defenders, Fantastic Force, and S.H.I.E.L.D. A highly skilled lawyer, she has served as legal counsel to various superheroes on numerous occasions.

She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. She first appeared in Savage She-Hulk #1 (February 1980). A cousin to Dr. Bruce Banner, Walters once received an emergency blood transfusion from him when she was wounded, which led to her acquiring a milder version of his Hulk condition. As such, Walters becomes a large powerful green-hued version of herself while still largely retaining her personality; in particular she retains her intelligence and emotional control, though like Hulk, she still becomes stronger if enraged. In later issues, her transformation is permanent.

She-Hulk has been a member of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Heroes for Hire, the Defenders, Fantastic Force, and S.H.I.E.L.D. A highly skilled lawyer, she has served as legal counsel to various superheroes on numerous occasions.

She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee, who wrote only the first issue, and was the last character he created for Marvel Comics before his return to comics with Ravage 2099 in 1992. The reason behind the character’s creation had to do with the success of The Incredible Hulk (1977–82) and The Bionic Woman TV series. Marvel was afraid that the show’s executives might suddenly introduce a female version of the Hulk, as had been done with The Six Million Dollar Man, so Marvel decided to publish their own version of such a character to make sure that if a similar one showed up in the TV series, Marvel would own the rights.

All but the first issue of The Savage She-Hulk were written by David Anthony Kraft and penciled by Mike Vosburg, and most issues were inked by Frank Springer. Vosburg later remarked, “The oddest thing about that book was that Frank drew really beautiful women, I drew really beautiful women, and yet, the She-Hulk was never overly attractive.” The Savage She-Hulk series lasted until 1982 where it ended with #25 (March 1982). She-Hulk then made guest appearances in other characters’ books. Her earliest guest-starring adventures followed no specific story line, besides her recurring bad luck with automobiles. She-Hulk also appeared in the limited series, Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions (June to August 1982), in which numerous superheroes are kidnapped from Earth to fight in space.

She-Hulk becomes a member of the Avengers in Avengers #221 (July 1982). Her early Avengers appearances continued the running gag about her car troubles. She-Hulk also made occasional guest appearances in The Incredible Hulk. Her appearance in Avengers #233 (July 1983) was drawn by John Byrne, who would later become strongly associated with the character.

Wakanda is a fictional nation in the Marvel Universe. It is the most prominent of several fictional African nations in the Marvel Universe, and it is home to the superhero Black Panther. Wakanda is located in Northeastern Africa, although its exact location has varied throughout the nation’s publication history: some sources place Wakanda in East Africa, just north of Tanzania, while others – such as Marvel Atlas #2 – show it bordering Lake Turkana, near Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia (and surrounded by fictional countries like Azania, Canaan and Narobia). Wakanda first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966), and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The name is evocative of the Wakamba tribe of Kenya.

wakanda locationThe Wakandan royal line began with Bashenga, an ancient Wakandan. Bashenga was supposedly the first king of unified Wakanda, and the first Black Panther some 10,000 years ago.

In the distant past, a massive meteorite comprised of the sound-absorbing mineral vibranium crashed in Wakanda, and was unearthed a generation before the events of the present-day.

Murderers of Marvel

“While the Avengers are doing everything they can to save people on screen, comic readers know that superheroes have gotten their hands bloody more than a few times. But for everyone with a strong opinion on killing in comics, now you have some official numbers to back up your argument in the form of a handy “Murderers of Marvel” infographic from the UK’s Morph Suits.

The makers of licensed Marvel body suits and other cosplay aides put together a rundown of who has killed whom in the Marvel Universe, ranking the guilty from merely Dangerous to straight up Lethal. While you may quibble over some of their picks (Captain America is listed as killing Harry Truman, but at the time Truman was a zombie, so it’s debatable), the whole exercise is worth a gander. Check it out below.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline in 40 GIFs
I love Marvel and gifs and (generally) so does imgur, so here we go! Btw, this gif doesn’t count since it’s not explaining anything and 41 is less fun for the title.
The timeline includes every movie and tv show up through Age of Ultron (May 2015). *SPOILER ALERT* for all the movies, but I tried to keep the tv spoilers vague.
P.S. If you like timelines and/or Doctor Who, you may want to check out River Song’s Timeline http://imgur.com/gallery/CG8s8 (JPEGs for all you gif-haters)

The Big Bang and the Infinity Stones

The Big Bang and the Infinity Stones
There are lots of resources out there about the Infinity Stones (or Gems). The only thing really clear in the movies is that there are six of them, formed around the time of the creation of the Universe, and each is extremely powerful.
Side note: in the comics, The Collector (shown here explaining the stones to the Guardians of the Galaxy) is an Elder of the Universe and has been alive for literally billions of years, so he actually fits at this point of the timeline too.

I came across this pretty cool animated fan film on Reddit this morning. This amateur film maker made a pretty convincing “What If” film that pits most of the major players in the Marvel and DC universes against each other. Quality work!  I’m now a subscriber. I hope to see much, much more from Saruhan Saral  in the future!!

From the YouTube video description:

All the Visuals and Animation by Saruhan Saral, created using Blender and After Effects

This is my first short film project. I started in February 2015 and it took me 3 months to finish the whole thing. This is not a commercial but a personal project and I’m not affiliated with any company(i.e. I don’t earn any money from this).

I didn’t model any of the characters, they are from the video games of these 2 companies but I did the rigging then animated the shots. I then used Adobe After Effects and Premiere for composition. Most voice clips are from the video games, mostly from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Sound Effects were edited in Audacity.

Hope you enjoy!

What we do know is that we will see ChadwickBoseman debut as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, with a stand alone Black Panther film coming in 2018.

According to Latino Review, Hudson has been seen hitting the gym and catching up on BlackPanther back issues.

It was previously rumored that DenzelWashington would take the role, however it is said that Washington is too expensive for a Marvel.
